We're excited to introduce a new structure for the Penticton Robotics program.
Historically, many students have joined our team with prior experience in robotics, programming, CAD, or business. At the same time, we've welcomed many students with no prior experience. While those students have gone on to accomplish great things, many spend significant time trying to catch up while struggling to keep pace with the demands of a fast moving FRC season, which can be discouraging.
The goal of this new structure is to make robotics more accessible, provide a better learning experience, and ensure every student has a basic foundation before being thrown into the “deep end.” Instead of jumping straight into a less structured environment, every student will begin in the Penticton Robotics Prep Course. This course will be the required starting point for every member of the program.
To support this new structure, Penticton Robotics will be divided into two cohorts: the Prep Course and the Competition Team. The Prep Course is where students complete the learning pathway and learn the foundational knowledge and skills. The Competition Team is where students apply and continue developing those skills in a less structured, more demanding environment. Each cohort will meet on different days.
In the Prep Course, students can choose one of three streams: build, programming, or business. Each stream includes lessons, projects, assignments, and resources based on the work that takes place throughout an FRC season. Along with developing foundational knowledge and skills, students will also build qualities that are essential on a less structured student led team, including initiative, reliability, and teamwork.
Once a student feels they have the basic skills, commitment, confidence, and mindset needed to move to the Competition Team, they will be able to interview with the team lead and a mentor. Students do not need to complete the entire curriculum before moving up. For some students, this could happen within their first few days. For others, it may take several weeks or months.
Both the Prep Course and the Competition Team are eligible for Princess Margaret Secondary School course credit. Students can choose whether they'd like to officially register and receive graduation credits and a mark on their transcript, or participate without receiving credit. The learning experience is exactly the same either way. The decision to earn credits is entirely up to the student.
For students wanting a grade and credits, the accredited robotics course is open to students across School District 67. Students attending Summerland Secondary School or Penticton Secondary School are welcome to cross enrol at Princess Margaret.
